St Petersburg

A number of people have said how much they liked the last lot of photos, so I thought I should probably post some more. Those of you who have read The Space in Between know that Rundāle Palace figures in the story, but even St Petersburg (then called Petrograd) is an important location.

  1. I often wonder at the fact that these fine buildings survived through the extremes of Communism. I don't know whether it was through a sense that art and architecture was worth preserving for the People, or maybe they were left as a reminder of feudal oppression.

  2. Yes, it is amazing, especially given that many other beautiful buildings were more or less trashed. I suppose we can only be thankful that these buildings (and the art within them) were allowed to survive.
